Obituary of Vernon Oliver Thompson

Vernon Oliver Thompson passed away peacefully on December 27, 2022 at St. Marys Memorial Hospital in his 93^rd year.  He lived a full life on his terms, with a generous spirit and a charitable heart.

He was a loving husband of 64 years to Bessie (née Hotson) and a caring father to Gary (Yvonne). Vernon was also a proud grandfather to Zachary (Steffi) and Evan (Emma).

He is survived by his sister, Anna Stephens, brother-in-law, Donald (Edna) Hotson, and sister-in-law, Lillian Marziali. Vernon will also be missed by his many beloved nieces and nephews.

Vernon was predeceased by his sister, Helen McLean-Nethercott, his sisters-in-law, Mary Kellestine and Grace Sparks, and his brothers-in-law Lloyd McLean, Gordon Nethercott, Bill Stephens, Webb Kellestine, John Sparks and  Volly Marziali.

Vernon began his life on a farm on Perth Road 163 (Mitchell Road) and finished public school at Motherwell SS1.  As a teenager, he did cement construction with Lloyd McLean and helped his father on the farm. 

In 1957, Vernon, Gordon and Jim Evans started up Evans and Thompson Badger business installing forage and manure equipment. Vernon loved hard work and enjoyed his life as a full-time farmer in Motherwell, owning and operating both his home farm and the former Scott farm. Vernon and Bessie later moved to St. Marys and lived there for 26 years.

Vernon was an active member of the Motherwell-Avonbank Presbyterian Church and served on both the Motherwell Presbyterian Church Board and the Avonbank Cemetery Board.

A man of many and varied talents and interests, Vernon wholeheartedly loved music and art, avidly treasured many antiques and collectibles, keenly travelled the world, and gladly helped his friends, family, and neighbours.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honour Vernon’s life will be held on January 27, 1 pm at the St. Marys United Church, 85 Church St. S., St. Marys, with reception to follow.
