Mr. Damen, as I knew him, had a heart of gold. I will never forget the day that I brought my friend from Detroit to visit his quaint little ice cream shop. I had excitedly been telling her of the ice cream shop with home-made waffles, retro decor. Only to find it closed.
I didn't know what to do, we were so disappointed. On a whim, I ran down to the resturant and ask Mr. Damen if there was any way, explaining how far she had come for ice cream...needless to say, I didn't get even halfway into my explanation. He smiled, took off his apron, nodded in the shops direction, and met us at the ice cream parlor. He opened the shop that day just for us. It truly was the best ice cream of my life and a day I will never forget. He never said a word, but his eye sparkled at our profuse thanks. What a warm and generous man!

Dear ome Ben, we have shared many great moments in our trips to Canada and the moments you and tante Bep visited us in Holland. Family does run through blood.. so although distance and life was and still is on the other side of the world.. I do and will always feel love, appreciation, and gratefulness for who you are. RIP and in my heart! Much love for Susie, Burt and the rest of the family❤️

My sincere condolences to Burt, his family and Susie. I lived and worked for Ben and Bep in Chatham when they bought the Flamingo motel. They took me in as part of the family. I have fond memories helping Ben put a new roof on the motel, building the new office, teaching Burt to dive, helping him with his school projects, and learning some Dutch in preparation for Oma and Opa’s visit from Holland. Ben was indeed a man of many skills. He will be sorely missed.

Ben gave much to our community of St. Marys. My family times spent at Damen's are some of my fondest memories, and Ben was cheerful, helpful and hard working. May your loving memories of time spent with Ben be a comfort to you during this difficult time.
