Obituary of Peter Gillies Newton

Peter (Pete) Gillies Newton passed away peacefully on November 4th 2022 at St. Marys Memorial Hospital in his 90th year with family by his side.
 
Predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth (Betty) in 2020.
 
Cherished father of Deborah Lemmons (Rob), Paula Sheldon (Allan) and Joanne King (Chris). He will be deeply missed by his 8 grandchildren, Andria Lemmons (Jeff), Michael Lemmons (Sarah), Sam Sheldon (Lisa), Laura Sheldon (Mike), Alison Sheldon (Mike), Stacey Sheldon (Jason), Patrick King and Aimee King. Proud great grandfather of 7 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by sisters -in -law Esvelda Newton and Joan Newton as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
 
Predeceased by his parents Harry and Jean Newton, and brothers John and Ken Newton.
 
Peter moved from Oil Springs to St. Marys with his parents and brothers in 1946. He apprenticed for his mechanics license at Richardson Motors and then owned and operated Newton Chrysler. After selling that business he and Elizabeth started their next venture Peter Newton Auto Supply in Parkhill, which they owned for 20 years. In his retirement years Peter enjoyed working for Hammond Aviation. Peter was a founding member of the Wildwood Sailing Club, active member of St. James Anglican Church, avid golfer, and he fulfilled his dream of obtaining his pilot's license later in life. He had a great sense of adventure and lived life to the fullest. Many thanks to his Elizabeth Street neighbours for all their support over the years.
 
A celebration of life open house will be held at the ST. MARYS LEGION, 66 Church St N, St. Marys, on Nov. 26, 2022 from 2 - 4 pm. 
 
Donations may be made to St. Marys Healthcare Foundation in memory of Peter.
