To Jordy and all of Steve's loved ones: We were devastated to hear of Steve's passing, and we are praying for all of you in this most challenging and difficult time. Even with rock-bottom sadness prevailing when I located Steve's obituary, I smiled widely and immediately when I saw the first photo you posted. It felt like the smile had to crack a sculpture and fight its way to my face, but it prevailed. Why? Because every single time I ever interacted with Steve, and every time I will ever think about him, a smile coincides. He was an amazing friend, coach & volunteer. We are so thankful to have him & Jordy enter our lives, mainly through sport, but also socially, and because of his countless behind-the-scenes contributions to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum. Steve would brainstorm with us in our boardroom, and just as willingly grab a shovel or a hammer and grind out whatever we were needing, ALWAYS with a smile on his face, and without ever looking at the clock. He was done only when the job was done. Steve coached two of our children, and we also coached together, and I was always proud to have him aboard. I think, as a staff, we did the children and community of St. Marys well, and even though I'm sure Steve would agree with that, he always carried the attitude of, "You don't have to be sick to get better." Steve was consistent, especially in three ways. He was never hesitant to come forward with an idea for change, and he ALWAYS had a case prepared to back it up. Secondly, he always, ALWAYS was looking out for the players. He was a passionate advocate for every one of them, top-to-bottom, and the boys & girls could always count on Steve having their backs. He was a cornerstone of championing that we play fair, that we be good sports regardless of winning or losing, that we represent St. Marys and their own families in a way that would make anybody proud, and that we never lose site of what was most important for the age and skill level of the kids we were coaching. And thirdly, Steve was ALWAYS positive in nature, and constructive when he dealt with our needs for improvement, collectively or individually! He leaves behind a pair of great sons, who will no doubt continue the legacy that the best Steve Keeler left behind. Jordy, you were a wonderful and productive teammate both on the ice as well as on the grass and clay! You too ALWAYS had a positive outlook, it seemed impossible for the opposition to phase you, you knew and served your role on any given team honourably, and you were always very well-liked by the players on both your right and left. You represented your mom Leanne and your dad Steve in the best of ways, in ways that made them proud then, and forever. My understanding is that you are soon to be married. Be assured that your dad will be by your side as you walk down the aisle! My friend Steve, you will be missed, but never forgotten. We'll no doubt see you again on the other side, and thanks again for the ride. R.I.P. With love & respect, Tom, Paula, Alanna, Jaxon & Mia Valcke

Ken Matthews posted a condolence
Leanne I can’t begin to tell you how sad Judy and I are to hear of Steve’s sudden passing. It brings back so many great memories. Like taking Steve to pick up that first car. He insisted on driving it back himself even though he didn’t have his license yet! Or the time a bunch of us were drinking in Pat’s shed in the middle of winter. We stuffed rags in beer bottles full of gas and burned them to stay warm, then went to the Lincoln game with soot all over our faces! He was one of the best people I’ve ever had the honour and privilege to have known. I’m saddened that we didn’t keep in touch all these years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this difficult time. Ken Matthews

our condolences to leanne, the boys and entire family
steve made a lot of long midnight shifts at peterbilt go by in the blink of an eye. maybe because we had the same bent sense of humour or because we both watched way too many Loonie Tune cartoons when we were kids. no matter how grumpy or tired Otis or i were at 3am in the morning, a simple quote from Bugs Bunny delivered with the Kibbles wit had everyone smiling. whenever we ran into each other at an arena either in st marys or strathroy, it was as if we had just seen each other yesterday even if it had been years. to quote The Shawshank Redemption, "i will miss my friend"

rest in peace my brother
